Our office has received a few requests for step parent adoptions recently. I love getting to do these and making a family complete! Below are a few things to think about when considering a step-parent adoption:
- Will the biological parent consent to the adoption?
- The child’s full birth name
- The child’s date of birth
- The child’s place of birth
- The child’s residence at the time of the adoption
- Do you want to change the child’s name?
- Names of any children in the adoptive home
- Address of adoptive parent(s) for the last 10 years
- You will need to have the adoptive parent complete a background check through Nebraska State Patrol
- You will need a Central Registry Check for the adoptive parent
- Finally, you will need to obtain a new birth certificate for the child.
While this is not a comprehensive list, it is a good starting point. We are happy to walk you through the steps and answer any questions you may have regarding step-parent adoptions or adoptions through the Department of Health and Human Services, or through private agencies.
